About Boston Park Advocates

What is Boston Park Advocates?

We are:

Walkers, runners, cyclists, coaches, parents, teachers, neighbors, artists, performers, gardeners, community organizers, youth advocates, health professionals and community leaders.

We represent:

Friends groups, conservancies, sports leagues, youth organizations, bike groups, community gardeners, greenway councils, arts and cultural organizations, schoolyard groups, neighborhood associations, health organizations, community development corporations, and environmental organizations.

We want:

  • Our parks and open spaces to be loved and well used by all residents of the city
  • To work hand in hand with agencies that manage these resources on our behalf
  • To make sure parks and open spaces are a priority in Boston and the resources needed are available

History

In the past few years the Boston Natural Areas Network and Franklin Park Coalition have convened a growing network of Boston Park Advocates for a number of actions and events, including:

  • A 2005 at-large city councilor candidates debate on parks and open spaces;
  • A policy paper for newly elected Governor Patrick;
  • A public safety meeting with city and state police responsible for parks;
  • Two workshops;
  • A 2009 at-large city councilor candidates’ debate on parks and open spaces;
  • Two meetings to consider issues of process and priority.

During these challenging economic times, it is clear that the level of outreach and organizing, and efforts to build our capacity and our relationships must increase so that we can collectively protect our parks.Over the next year, Boston Park Advocates will find ways to increase our connections to each other.

About

Boston Park Advocates (BPA) is a growing, volunteer-based, citywide network of active park stakeholders who are the champions for Boston’s parks and open spaces.

We are a diverse and broad based constituency of individuals and organizations that collectively use and care about Boston’s open spaces because they enrich our lives immeasurably, with both their beauty and functionality. These places are our parks, playgrounds and athletic fields, our streets, sidewalks and bikeways, our community gardens, and our beaches, greenways, urban wilds and reservations.

The goal of the network is to connect and unify Boston’s diverse park and community stakeholders. We aim to build our capacity, share resources and information, raise public awareness, and strengthen the collective impact of our network members to influence public park policy and increase support for the range of urban parks and open spaces.
