Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) State-Owned Parks in Boston

Managed by the Massachusetts DCR:
  • A total of 2,950 acres of Boston parkland - most in large reservations
  • Beaches in East Boston, South Boston, and Dorchester, outdoor pools, and skating rinks
  • Charles River parks, including the Esplanade and Castle Island
  • Stonybrook Reservation, Boston's largest park and forest
  • Linear parks: the Southwest Corridor and the nearly completed Neponset Greenway
  • 416 acres of protected Urban Wilds and many more smaller parks, playgrounds, and fields
DCR Urban Park Budget for Boston's Parks:
  • Despite its larger acreage, DCR parks in Boston are run on far less funding than City of Boston parks and have suffered cuts continually over the past decade (funding is down more than 20% since 2008)
