Boston Parks and Recreation Department City-owned Parks

Managed by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department and its 220 employees:
  • A total of 2,346 acres - 1,000 in the historic Emerald Necklace (designed by Frederick Law Olmsted)
  • 217 parks, playgrounds, and athletic fields
  • 16 historic burial grounds and 3 cemeteries
  • 75 game courts for tennis and basketball, 2 golf courses, and 4 high school athletic fields
  • 65 squares and 126 acres of protected Urban Wilds
  • About 125,000 park trees and 35,000 state trees
  • 2,100 permits for park activities granted annually
  • 200 arts can cultural programs hosted by the city's ParkARTS
Boston Parks Department Budget FY 2014
  • $16.9 million for operating expenses (just .6 of 1% of the city's overall operating budget)
  • $5.8 million additional "external" funds from the city trusts, fees, and fundraising
  • $18.9 million for capital improvements - a significant increase over past years! (about 9% of the city's overall capital budget)
